Overview

Farm Accounting That Works in the Field

Farm operators manage many expenses across multiple fields, animals, and seasons. They buy seeds, feed, fuel, medicine, and labor. They earn income from crop sales and livestock sales. Most existing tools require a stable internet connection, a subscription, or an accountant to operate.

Rural farms often have poor or no cellular reception. Cloud tools do not work reliably in these conditions. AgriLog is built to work in airplane mode, permanently. It runs on a local SQLite database using the Drift library. No data leaves the device unless the operator chooses to export it.

During setup, the operator selects a farm mode. The mode controls which screens and categories appear. The operator can change the mode at any time without losing data.

AgriLog is designed for farm operators who manage real money and need reliable records without technical complexity:

Built for Real Field Conditions

Receipt Photo Attachment

Attach a photo of a receipt to any transaction. The photo stores in local app storage on the device. No image uploads. No cloud processing. The database stores the local file path. This provides a complete audit trail without any external service.

Farm / Personal Expense Split

Many farm expenses have a personal component. For example, a vehicle used 70% for farm work and 30% for personal use. AgriLog allows the operator to set a farm/personal split (0–100%) on any transaction. Reports show the effective farm amount and a separate farm-vs-personal summary for tax purposes.

Custom and Default Categories

The app seeds standard expense and income categories on first run (Seed, Fertilizer, Fuel, Feed, Vet, Crop Sales, Livestock Sales, and others). Operators can add custom categories or deactivate existing ones. Categories with existing transactions are deactivated, not deleted, so historical data stays intact.

Animal Group Tracking

Farmers who manage flocks or herds can create Animal Groups (for example, "Laying hens" or "2026 lambs"). Expenses such as feed and medicine can be tagged to a group. The group detail view shows total cost and total income, so the operator can see whether the group is profitable.

PIN and Biometric Lock

Farm financial data is sensitive. AgriLog supports an optional numeric PIN lock and biometric authentication (fingerprint or face). The PIN stores via flutter_secure_storage. The lock is off by default and is prompted once during onboarding.

Periodic Backup Reminder

Because there is no automatic cloud sync, AgriLog tracks the last export date. After 30 days without an export, it shows a gentle reminder to back up data. This prevents data loss if the device is lost or damaged.

Technical Architecture

Engineered for Reliability and Data Safety

AgriLog is built with Flutter and uses a layered architecture that separates data, business logic, and presentation. Key technical decisions:

Privacy & Data Ownership

Farm Financial Data Stays on the Farm

Farm financial records are sensitive business data. A competitor or lender could use this information against the operator. AgriLog is built with a strict no-network-calls policy:

  • No analytics SDKs: The app contains no Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, or similar tracking packages.
  • No crash reporting that phones home by default: If crash reporting is added in a future version, it will be opt-in and disclosed.
  • No account or login required: The operator starts recording immediately after selecting a farm mode. No email address is collected.
  • No cloud sync: All data stays on the device. Export is the only way to move data out, and the operator controls it.
  • Receipt photos stored locally: Attached receipt photos use image_picker and store in app-local storage via path_provider. The database stores the local file path, not the image itself. No upload occurs.
